  • Glossary of Motel Terms

  • Our visitors come from all over the globe and similar hospitality terms do not necessarily mean the same everywhere. As such, we've put together this glossary to help you understand the meaning of certain words and phrases so that you are well-equipped to make an informed decision about staying with us.

  • Bed-Related Terms

    • Sofa Bed

      a sofa (or couch) that can be converted into a bed.

    • Single Sofa Bed

      a sofa bed designed or suitable for 1 person.

    • Double Sofa Bed

      a sofa bed designed or suitable for 2 persons.

    • Single Bed (aka Twin Bed)

      a bed designed or suitable for 1 person. [See image below for dimensions.]

    • Double Bed (aka Full Bed)

      a bed designed or suitable for 2 persons. [See image below for dimensions.]

    • Queen Bed

      a bed designed or suitable for 2 persons. [See image below for dimensions.]

    • King Bed

      a bed designed or suitable for 2 persons. [See image below for dimensions.]

    • Super King Bed

      a bed designed or suitable for 2 persons. [See image below for dimensions.]

  • Room-Related Terms

    • Studio

      a self-contained unit of accommodation which consists of a single large room with a bed, separate sitting area, and a kitchenette. All our studio rooms have a Queen bed and an en suite bathroom.

    • Standard Studio

      Our Standard Studios are studio units with a shower in the en suite bathroom.

    • Spa Studio

      Our Spa Studios are studio units containing a single Spa Bath with shower in the en suite bathroom.

    • Deluxe Spa Studio

      Our Deluxe Spa Studio is a spa studio with a larger square area and a semi-private balcony.

    • Suite

      a self-contained unit of accommodation which consists of two or more clearly defined rooms in addition to an en suite bathroom. All our suites have a kitchenette, a separate dining area, and a sofa bed in the living (lounge) room.

    • Access Suite

      Our Access Suite is a 1-bedroom, wheelchair-accessible suite containing a walk-in shower in the en suite bathroom, a Super King Bed in the bedroom, and a Single Sofa Bed in the living (lounge) area.

    • Standard Suite

      Our Standard Suite is a 1-bedroom suite containing a shower in the en suite bathroom, a Super King Bed in the bedroom, and a Single Sofa Bed in the living (lounge) area.

    • Spa Suite

      Our Spa Suite is a 1-bedroom suite containing a single Spa Bath with shower in the en suite bathroom, a Queen Bed in the bedroom, and a Double Sofa Bed in the living (lounge) room.

    • Superior Suite

      Our Superior Suite is a 2-bedroom suite containing a shower in the en suite bathroom, a Super King Bed in the master bedroom, a Queen Bed in the second bedroom, and a Double Sofa Bed in the living (lounge) room.

    • Executive Suite

      Our Executive Suite is a 2-bedroom suite containing a single Spa Bath with a shower in the en suite bathroom, a Super King Bed in the EACH bedroom, and a Double Sofa Bed in the living (lounge) room.

  • Service-Related Terms

    • Barbecue (BBQ) Grill

      For your enjoyment, we have on-site a Goldair Kiwi Select 4-Burner BBQ Grill [PDF link]. It is loaned out on a first come basis. Please contact reception to discuss its availability for your use.

    • Concierge Service

      Your hosts are very knowledge about the local region and are available to assist you in making your stay in Marlborough an enjoyable and memorable one. Wine tours and other sightseeing tours can be arranged upon request. Whatever you need we at 171 On High Motel will endeavour to provide.

    • Continental Breakfast

      According to the Bed & Breakfast Association of New Zealand, "the minimum required for a Continental breakfast is a selection of cereals, fruit (either fresh, stewed or canned), pure fruit juice (not fruit drinks), tea, coffee (ground - not instant unless specifically requested), toast and spreads, yoghurt, water and milk."

      Our Continental Breakfast is available for a charge of NZD $16 per person and includes a selection of fruit juices, fresh fruits, cereals, toasts, yoghurt, soft spreads, tea, and ground coffee. [See image below for an example.]

    • Daily Housekeeping

      Units are serviced daily between 9am and 12 noon for guests who are staying more than one night. We endeavour to do this at a time convenient to our guest. Alternatively, if you do not wish us to service your room, please let us know and, if required, we can collect your rubbish and/or provide you with clean towels.

    • Durable Dinnerware

      In each room, you'll find long-lasting, non-disposable dishes, cups, glasses, cutlery and utensils.

    • Eco-Friendly Cleaning

      We use environmentally-friendly cleaning products throughout our motel complex.

    • Eco-Friendly Toiletries

      We provide natural, locally-made liquid soap, shampoo and conditioner in bulk dispensers as an alternative to the usual bars of soap which have to be discarded for hygiene reasons.

    • Energy Conservation

      Our energy conservation efforts include the use of low-energy light bulbs in all applications where suitable bulbs are currently available. We also ask you to assist our efforts by switching off heaters, electric blankets, television, and lights when you are leaving your unit or when you no longer require their use.

    • FREE Ultra-Fast WiFi

      Ultra-Fast Wireless Internet access is provided FREE of charge in each guestroom. Please contact reception during office hours and we can provide you with a access details.

      PLEASE NOTE: it is prohibited to download copyrighted materials. By logging into our system, you accept that you are responsible for the content of your downloads.

    • Linen Change Program

      Used linen (sheets & pillow cases) is ALWAYS replaced with fresh ones when a unit becomes vacant. Otherwise, linen is replaced once a week. Extended-stay guests can request a more frequent linen change if needed. Please contact reception for more details.

    • Natural Air Ventilation

      All our rooms have sliding doors and windows that open to allow a free flow of fresh air.

    • Newspaper Optional

      In order to reduce paper waste, we only deliver newspapers to those guests who would like to receive them. If you require a newspaper, The Christchurch Press can be delivered to your door (FREE of charge) on Monday to Saturday. Please contact reception by 6:15 pm the evening before to arrange this.

    • Recycle Bins On-Site

      Recycle bins are available to the right at the rear of the carport for recycling paper, cardboard, glass, cans and plastics in order to reduce the amount of waste going to our local landfill. We encourage you to assist us in our efforts by placing your newspapers, cardboard, glass, cans and plastics beside your rubbish bin so that we may recycle them.

    • Smoking

      Smoking is NOT permitted in the units. For those who wish to smoke outside, we have provided sand tub ash trays and ask that these be used to put out your cigarettes / cigars. Please ensure that unit windows and doors are closed if you are smoking outside.

    • Towel Re-Use Program

      As part of our energy and water conservation efforts, we encourage you to consider re-using your towels as is appropriate. If you wish to have your towels replaced, please place them in the bath or shower - if you hang them on the towel rails or leave them elsewhere, we will assume that you wish to re-use them.

    • Water Conservation

      Our water conservation efforts include the installation, where possible, of low-flow devices in shower heads and taps and dual-flush toilets in all bathrooms. We also encourage re-use of towels and sheets to reduce the frequency of washing. Rest assured these measures do not lower the quality of our service to you.
